Maui, the second-largest island in Hawaii, is known for its breathtaking landscapes, aloha spirit, and deep cultural roots. Once home to Hawaiian royalty, Maui’s rich history includes ancient Hawaiian traditions, the rise of the sugar plantation era, and waves of immigrant communities who helped shape the island into what it is today.

Among these communities, Filipinos hold a special place. Starting in the early 1900s, Filipino sakadas (contract laborers) arrived to work in Maui’s sugar and pineapple plantations. Despite facing hardship and discrimination, they brought with them resilience, a strong work ethic, and a vibrant culture. Over time, they built families, churches, community groups, and small businesses—cementing their legacy on the island.

Today, the Filipino community is one of the largest and most active ethnic groups in Maui, contributing to every area of life—from education and healthcare to politics and the arts. Their rich heritage continues to thrive, celebrated in festivals, language, and the enduring values of bayanihan (community) and puso (heart).
